No Longer Jobless, Peter (P.J.) Lebied Offers Some Hope to the Unemployed in Central New York

ALBANY, NY (10/28/2010)(readMedia)– The unemployment rate in the Syracuse area is 7.5 percent, representing 25,000 unemployed Central New Yorkers, but Peter (P.J) Lebied no longer counts himself among these numbers. It was a long road to get to this point, however, with many trials and tribulations along the way. On December 7, 2008, P.J. found out that his employment as a Manager at Syracuse China would soon end. It was also the day he became engaged to be married.

No Longer Jobless, Richard Miller Offers Some Hope to the Unemployed in the Southern Tier

ALBANY, NY (10/21/2010)(readMedia)– Richard Miller is no longer one of the long-term unemployed. The former manager had been out of work since October 2009. He spent that time pounding the pavement, knocking on doors, and utilizing the services of the One-Stop Career Center in Binghamton, known as Broome-Tioga Workforce New York.

New York State’s Economy Lost 15,600 Private Sector Jobs in September


State’s Unemployment Rate Remains Unchanged at 8.3%

ALBANY, NY (10/21/2010)(readMedia)– New York State’s economy lost 15,600 private sector jobs, or 0.2%, on a seasonally adjusted basis in September 2010, the State Labor Department reported today. The total nonfarm job count in New York also decreased in September 2010, falling by 37,600, or 0.4%. The nonfarm job count tracks all jobs in the private and public sectors. It does not count the self-employed or workers on farms.

Department of Labor Launches New Web Site to Help Youth Find Their First Job and Explore Careers

ALBANY, NY (09/21/2010)(readMedia)– With the new school year officially under way, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner today highlighted a new feature on the Department of Labor’s web site to help introduce youth to the world of work here in New York State. The new gateway for youth – www.labor.ny.gov/youth – serves as a single point of contact to connect youth with the tools and resources they need to build a resume, budget for self-sufficiency or find their first job.

Labor Department Warns New Yorkers About Online Employment Scams

ALBANY, NY (09/12/2010)(readMedia)– Today, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner alerted all New Yorkers on the growing number of online employment scams that promise high salaries for very little work. These solicitations are appearing on social media pages like Facebook and e-mail in boxes designed to lure desperate job seekers. The Labor Department was notified of this scam by several job seekers who use the Department’s Facebook page.
