Scenic Artists Recruit Apprentices

NEW YORK, NY (12/01/2010)(readMedia)– United Scenic Artists will conduct a recruitment from November 15, 2010 through January 14, 2011 for five (5) scenic artists apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications can be downloaded from the website www.usa829.org on the Membership > Exam Info > Apprentice Program for Scenic Artists page. Applications can also be obtained from the union office located at 29 West 38th Street, 15th Floor, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. All applications must be received no later than January 14, 2011.

There is a $25.00 testing fee payable to United State Artists, Local USA 829 Apprenticeship Program Trust Fund. A determination to waive this fee will be made if prior notification is received and determined to be of good reason. Such as, if you are on welfare or receiving social services, the fee will be waived. It will only be waived if you provide verifiable proof.

The Committee requires that all applicants:

* Must be at least 18 years old – upon acceptance into the program, an applicant must show proof of age and have a valid Social Security number.

* Must have earned a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) upon acceptance into the program.

* Must have the agility and physical ability to:

* Lift 5 gallons of paint, joint compound and/or materials on the job.

* Work often at great heights on ladders, scaffolding, cranes, and genies (with fall protection) at indoor locations and exterior locations.

* Work outdoors on locations under various weather and temperature conditions, in extreme hot and cold, rain and snow.

* Work indoors, during the summer, in shops without air conditioning with temperatures well above 80 degrees.

* At studios or locations, an applicant may be asked to work long days ten or more hours, with the work-day beginning at 7am or earlier.

* Be willing to travel outside of the five boroughs of New York to work.

* Must be able to tolerate loud work environments and dirty conditions.

* In pre-production film work, and in scenic shops, scenic artists are working closely with other Locals that are engaged in using loud power tools, generating saw dust, and welding fumes. Upon being accepted into the program, an applicant will be required to be fit tested for a respirator to protect him/her from unhealthy by products from materials used in the Local’s trade and those of other departments.

* Must wear protective equipment such as respirators, safety glasses, hearing protectors and work boots.

* Must have reliable transportation or means of transportation to job sites and related training locations upon acceptance into the program.

* Applicant must be able to pass a Trade Specific Test in English (read and write in English)

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
