Roofers Recruit Apprentices

ELMIRA, NY (02/11/2011)(readMedia)– The Roofers Local 203 Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Elmira Area II, will conduct a recruitment from February 7, 2011 through February 3, 2012 for four apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.

Applications will be available at the Elmira Department of Labor Office, 318 Madison Avenue, Elmira NY 14901 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, and must be completed and mailed to the Roofers JAC office only at 32 West State Street, Binghamton, NY 13901.

The Committee requires that applicants:

• Must be at least 18 years old.

• Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a trade-specific affidavit signed by the applicant which includes:

o Working with sharp objects, hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants.

o Prolonged standing, walking, and repeated squatting and/or bending.

o Working under exposure to temperature extremes such as being outside on winter days or on roofs in summer where high temperatures can be reached can also be expected as part of everyday activity.

o Lifting/and or moving of heavy objects and equipment, working off of ladders and scaffolds, and working at extreme heights can also be expected.

• Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites and related instruction classes.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
