Painters Recruit Apprentices

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (07/25/2010)(readMedia)– The District Council #9, Joint Apprentice and Training Fund, will conduct a recruitment from July 26, 2010 through August 6, 2010, for fifty painter, decorator, and paperhanging apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner announced today.
Applications must be obtained in person only at District Council #9, 45-15 36th Street, Long Island City, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday during the recruitment period. This is a limited application recruitment. Applications will be accepted during the recruitment period or until 500 applications have been issued; whichever comes first.
The committee requires that applicants:
* Must be at least 18 years old.
* Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D).
* Must be physically able to perform the work required as determined by personal statement from apprentice of his/her ability to perform the work of Painter/Decorator/Paperhanger.
* Upon selection, applicant must be able to attend a three day orientation.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
