by New York State Department of Labor

ALBANY, NY (09/21/2010)(readMedia)– With the new school year officially under way, State Labor Commissioner Colleen C. Gardner today highlighted a new feature on the Department of Labor’s web site to help introduce youth to the world of work here in New York State. The new gateway for youth – www.labor.ny.gov/youth – serves as a single point of contact to connect youth with the tools and resources they need to build a resume, budget for self-sufficiency or find their first job.

The new site, branded “Dream it, Plan it and Make it Happen,” provides targeted resources for youth ages 14–17 and 18-24. It blends conventional wisdom for teens such as how to get working papers, prepare for job interviews and obey labor laws, with today’s critical messages of safeguarding digital identity and maintaining health and wellness for life and career success.

“As more and more youth take on new jobs and new responsibilities to help contribute to their families, this web site takes on a whole new meaning and importance,” said Commissioner Gardner. “We know that one of the highest predictors of success in life is an early introduction to work. In the short term, we want this site to be the first stop for all youth in this state to get that first job. In the long term, we want this web site to be a tool to help youth find their career path; to plan for it and then make it happen.”

October is usually the time when retail outlets begin to gear up for the holiday season. Typically, retailers start to hire in October, increase in November and reach peak level in December. Youth fill many of these jobs and they need to know the rules, especially since school is in session.

When school is in session, minors 16 or 17 years old who are working in permitted occupations except farming, newspaper carriers and street trades, can work:

• 4 hours on Mondays through Thursdays preceding school days, or 8 hours on other days,

• between the hours of 6 AM and 10 PM,

• a maximum of 6 days per week, for

• a maximum of 28 hours per week.

These requirements are even more restrictive for minors 14 and 15, and different for those doing farm work, street trades, and for newspaper carriers.

Commissioner Gardner also touted the website – www.careerzone.ny.gov, which people can access through the Youth Portal. Nearly one million New Yorkers visit CareerZone each year in the classroom and at home. The site displays in-depth career and education information for more than 800 occupations, including job descriptions, estimated wages and the job outlook for each occupation. The special STEM portal, found at www.careerzone.ny.gov/stemventure, features a video application that lets students create their own avatars and explore a variety of STEM careers.

Labor Department Encourages Job Seekers to Find Their Next Job on the New Site?? And Urges Employers to List Job Openings????

by New York State Department of Labor

ALBANY, NY (08/11/2010)(readMedia)– To make it easier for job seekers to search for careers, the New York State Department of Labor has launched the New York State Job Bank web site: www.laborny.jobs.

There are 84,217 jobs posted on the new site and it continues to grow.?? The site offers free services for both job seekers and businesses to speed hiring. Job seekers can post resumes and scan job openings, while businesses can post job openings and view resumes to find qualified candidates.??

The new site offers these benefits for the job seeker:??
Helps them to search job listings by key word or location??
Alerts them to the latest job postings as often as they choose???
Allows them to post resumes?
Gives them the option to let employers view their resume??????

The Department urges New Yorkers to register with the site, post their resumes, and let the Labor Department become their personal job search agent.??

“In this tough job market we need to find every way possible to improve the tools we already have,” said Commissioner Gardner. “We will continue to expand and improve this site because the unemployed deserve nothing less. This site adds more jobs, makes it easier for job seekers to find those jobs, and helps businesses to post jobs and find talent.”??

Businesses that register with the new site get these benefits:??
Enables them to search thousands of resumes from a highly qualified talent pool
Automatically adds jobs listed on their web sites to the job bank
Expands company exposure by posting their job across the country via Labor Department partnerships??????

Job seekers already give the new site high praise. DOL Facebook fan, Karen E., of Rego Park, says, “I found the new site very easy to navigate. It was easy to set up my account and post my resume.”

Another fan says, “Thanks, just applied for a new posting I hadn’t seen on other boards.”??

You can also search for jobs directly on the Labor Department’s homepage: www.labor.ny.gov???????

Lack of knowledge about the weight of their gold and strange terms like “pennyweights (dwt),” “grams” and “troy ounces,” confuse and intimidate many potential gold sellers.

In a telephone survey of 600 potential customers who had signed up to do business with GoldFellow® but never sent their gold, 78% of the respondents acknowledged they were unsure of what they should expect for their valuables.

Barbara Whitman of Seattle, WA said she ordered information from six different gold buyers only to trash all of them. When questioned by a GoldFellow® representative as to why she chose not to send her gold, Whitman admitted her confusion.

“Honestly, I felt dumb, but I said I wanted an idea of how much money to expect and the pennyweight prices offered by gold companies just added to my confusion.”

According to Michael Gusky, president of GoldFellow®, “Listening to the customer opened my eyes.”

“Wow, I had assumed if we offered a great customer experience, significantly higher gold prices and free, insured FedEx® shipping that would be enough to win,” said Gusky. “But, very often these customer benefits were overlooked because our pricing was misunderstood. Honestly, we’ve been communicating in the wrong language,” realized Gusky.

GoldFellow® did more than listen and developed a real solution, launching their “Gold Payments Gallery,” on its website www.GoldFellow.com.

“This new interactive tool is a virtual show and tell,” said Mary Hamilton, a customer support manager who has worked for Gusky since 1987. “It gives people interested in selling gold an opportunity to peruse hundreds of photos and see the actual dollar amount paid to an individual seller for that particular piece of gold jewelry. Our Gold Payments Gallery gives people a way to see and compare items they have at home to items which are similar – or possibly identical – to items GoldFellow® has already purchased.”

Each photo, according to Hamilton, shows the total amount paid for the gold item along with the karat and actual weight in both pennyweight and gram units.

‘We have taken the mystery out of gold selling – it’s entertaining and educational,” added Gusky who is very proud of GoldFellow®’s latest innovation. “We listened and took action,” said Gusky. “As consumer advocates, we are always looking for innovative ways to provide valuable information, giving people greater power to make intelligent financial decisions.”

Michael Gusky began his gold industry career in 1977. His fine jewelry company became the largest supplier of gold to America’s retailers and was sold to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire-Hathaway in July 2007.
